International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development 2017 kicks off
Nearly 600 participants attended yesterday the Official Launch of the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development 2017. The event took place in the International Tourism Fair of Spain, FITUR, and will be followed by 12 months of global actions aimed at advancing sustainable tourism contribution to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

La Organización Mundial del Turismo da comienzo al Año Internacional del Turismo Sostenible para el Desarrollo 2017
Su Majestad el Rey ha presidido el acto con motivo del lanzamiento del Año Internacional del Turismo Sostenible para el Desarrollo, organizado por la Organización Mundial del Turismo (OMT). Un encuentro que ha reunido a ministros de turismo de todo el mundo. En la celebración se ha enfatizado el inmenso potencial del turismo para el desarrollo de todos los países en el marco de los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible y la necesidad continuar avanzando hacia un sector más sostenible que redunde en el beneficio de las comunidades locales, y la preservación de los valores culturales y naturales.

FITUR 2017: UNWTO with a focus on sustainability and tourism in Africa and in the MENA region
The International Tourism Fair in Spain (FITUR), taking place on January 18-22 in Madrid, comprises a number of events organized by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO). Activities will have a special focus on sustainable tourism, including the official presentation of the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development 2017 on January 18.

The Year Ahead: harnessing the power of tourism to build a better world
Dear friends, I write to you as I begin my final year as UNWTO Secretary-General, a position I have been privileged to hold for almost seven years at an Agency I have been proud to serve for the past decade. During this time I have seen tourism become one of the world’s most important and impactful socio-economic sectors of our times. I have seen its growing relevance to the lives of millions around the world, to the preservation of our common values and to greater understanding among people of all walks of life.

Tourism, a national priority for Honduras
Honduras has joined the more than 70 countries committed to support the Travel and Tourism sector as a means to promote inclusive growth and development. During an official visit of UNWTO Secretary-General, Taleb Rifai, President Juan Orlando Hernández was presented with the Open Letter on Travel and Tourism. The joint initiative by UNWTO and the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) calls on Heads of State and Government to publicly express their political commitment to support tourism as a development driver.
